Abstract

To evaluate the effect of forest floor cover on the sediment generation on the forest slope, we measured forest floor cover and the transport of surface soil (fine soil, gravel, and litter) using small sediment traps on forest slopes in Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation s and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantations, located in Shiiba Village, Miyazaki Prefecture. These results suggested that the presence of plants such as forest floor vegetation and litter on the forest floor buffers rainfall energy. On the other hand, even under the condition that the forest floor cover is large, some stands have a relatively large transport of fine soil in the cypress forest, suggesting that environmental factors other than the forest floor cover have an effect.
