本稿で取り上げる大和ミュージアム（広島県呉市）は，正式名称が「呉市海事歴史科学館」であり，呉市を設立主体とする博物館である。呉における戦前から戦後に至る船舶製造技術を主たる展示内容としているが，愛称の「大和ミュージアム」が示すように，旧日本海軍の超大型軍艦「大和」の建造およびその軍事活動が展示の中心となっている。こうした特徴から，大和ミュージアムは少なからぬ物議を醸しつつ，2005（平成17）年４月23日に開館した。ただし，多くの関係者の予想を大きく裏切り，大和ミュージアムは極めて多くの入館者を集め，開館後約８年を迎えた2013（平成25）年３月17日，累計入館者数が800万人に達した。通常の地方の歴史博物館の年間入館者数が数万人という規模であることからも，その極度の人気ぶりがうかがえる。この博物館は，その人気ぶりから呉市やその周辺の観光・地域戦略を大きく変化させている。本稿では，そうした大和ミュージアム開館を契機とする呉市周辺の観光・地域戦略の変化について明らかにするものである。

This article discusses the Yamato Museum, officially known as the Kure Maritime Museum, in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Established by the city government, the museum mainly presents the shipbuilding technology in the city from the pre- to post-World War II period. More specifically, as implied by its nickname, Yamato Museum, the focus of the exhibition is on the construction and military activities of the Imperial Japanese Navy's gigantic battleship “Yamato.” Though these characteristics caused some controversy, it opened on April 23, 2005. Contrary to the apprehension of many people concerned, it has attracted numerous visitors; the total number reached eight million on March 17, 2013, eight years after its opening. Compared with other local historical museums whose annual visitors in general amount to only tens of thousands, the Yamato Museum enjoys extremely high popularity, which has drastically changed the tourism and community strategies of Kure and surrounding areas. This article aims to reveal the details of these changes caused by the establishment of the Yamato Museum.
