<14>^C Ages by a Tandetron Accelerator Mass Spectrometer of Charred Carbonaceous Residue on Jomon Pottery (1)

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to report radiocarbon (^<14>C) ages for charred carbonaceous residue on the surface of deep bowls in the Middle Jomon, which were found during the excavation in 1995 at Kitaduka site, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture (Table2,Figurel). Solid-carbon and Humic-acid ingredients were separated by using NaOH solutions from charred deposits, most likely the food residue of Jomon people, collected from the surface of four pottry fragments. ^<14>C ages have been measured by using a Tandetron accelerator mass spectrometer at Dating and Materials Research Center, Nagoya University. ^<14>C ages extend from 4,840±90 to 4,040±90y.B.P. (Table3). A possibility of the existence of the latter humic-acid component was shown for one charred-deposit sample from pottry fragments ; the ^<14>C age of humic-acid was younger by 390 years than that of solid-carbon for sample IKD01. ^<14>C ages for four pottery fragments were consistent with chronological results obtained by typological studies of the fragments.
