Abstract

This paper reports the radiocarbon age of an ancient document "Minamoto no Yoritomo Sodehan Migyosho". The document descended to the Matsugi family which had controlled the craftsmen of metal casting since the Warring State Period. The content of the document is about the formal recognition of their authority over the craftsmen by Minamoto no Yoritomo who established the first military government in AD 1192. Although the document has the description of written age, AD1189, the paleographical views suggested that the document is a counterfeit written in several centuries later. The calibrated radiocarbon age also indicated that the document was forged in the 16th century or the first half of the 17th century. However, it is possible that the document was written on an old-paper sheet; accordingly, there is room for further investigation to determine the accurate forged age.
