Abstract

How do education and training in clinical psychology postgraduate programs help students develop as clinical psychologists? The purpose of this study was to investigate how education and training in postgraduate clinical psychology programs influence students' development of identity as clinical psychologists. First, reports concerning the development of an identity as a clinical psychologist, written by students in clinical psychology postgraduate programs, were analyzed. Second, training and development of postgraduate students as psychotherapists in the U.S. was looked into, based on the experience of a guest lecturer. Results based on the analysis of the students' reports and the lecture suggested the importance of continuous self reflection and the importance of clinical experience in the field throughout the training.
