Abstract

This study investigated the effects of narcissism on perceived social support under ego threat. Participants’ perceived social support (emotional support, informational support) was measured before and after they wrote an essay about an ego-threat situation or a control situation. Path analysis was used to examine the influence of narcissism and self-esteem on the perceived support scores after the manipulation. In the ego-threat condition, narcissism was found to have a significant negative effect on the possibility to offer emotional support and a positive effect on the possibility to offer informational support. Reducing the possibility to offer emotional support under ego threat may keep the resource of superiority and competence from expanding on others. Besides, elevating the possibility to offer informational support under ego threat may raise the predominance on interpersonal relationships. Therefore, narcissism may extend the self-concept about superiority and competence via social support.
