Focusing on the history and culture of Chinese in Kobe displayed in Kobe Overseas Chinese History Museum, this paper will discuss how the Chinese in Japan show their ethnic identity through the interpretation of their history and culture. Kobe Overseas Chinese History Museum was established in 1979 and reopened in 2003 with the cooperation of several scholars of overseas Chinese studies. On the subject of luo di sheng gen(落地生根), which means “Overseas Chinese have put down roots in Kobe”, the history of Kobe Chinese is divided into six stages and the exhibitions are carefully selected to characterize each stage. The display emphasizes the interaction between Chinese and Japanese and the Chinese` contribution to the community through historical events including Hanshin Earthquake. On the other hand, the differences and conflicts inside the Chinese community are carefully avoided. The display also expresses the ideas of Chinese in Kobe about the Sino-Japanese War and presents a vision of cooperation and harmony between Japanese and foreigners. Thus, by asserting that they have put down roots in Japan and contributed to the community, the Overseas Chinese in Japan are calling for an equal position in Japan as Japanese citizens as well as Chinese persons maintaining Chinese culture.
