Abstract

In this paper, we have studied the relationships of the water and soil conservation to the forest and stand composition. In result, it was observed that the present forest has the strong influence on the forest floor condition, e.g. the condition of the surface soil, the A_0 layer, the undergrowth (factors concerned with the infiltration). And by analyzing the correlation between the forest. floor condition such as the erosion factor and the forest factors, the crown factor was recognized as the factor having the close connection with the forest floor condition. The factor acts as the decreasing factor of the relative light intensity, the litter factor and the interception with the stand factor of the rainfall, and it controls the forest floor condition in connection density factor. In this report, according to taking a photograph of the crown profile and the interpretation of it, we were able to quantify the crown form and the crown volume. Then we organized the stand growth system with the crown model to investigate the optimum forest composition and the effect of the forest treatments for the purpose of the water conservation. This system is based on the height growth and includes not only usual factors such as the diameter and basal area, but also the decreasing of the number of stems by mortality using the crown factor, other factors such as the litter factor besides forest factors. In the case of estimating the decreasing of the number of stems by mortality, we assumed that the stand crown volume is constant. The factors estimated by this system are as follows: Forest factor; diameter, height, distribution of them, crown height, volume Forest floor factor; relative light intensity, litter weight, A_0 layer weight Crown factor; crown parameter, crown volume, crown weight density We obtained the satisfactory result of estimating the parameters and predicting the forest and stand factors using the Sugi data in Kumamotoregion. Also, we were able to have the effective judgement by applying the crown model in case of inserting the forest treatments such as thinning and pruning.
