Abstract

Hot press treatment to prevent the surface checks during drying was applied to sugi(Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) boxed heart timbers. In this study, drying set on the surface layer, which might influence surface check, was measured under hot press temperature of 90℃ to 210℃. Large values (over 3%) of set were indicated under the condition of a comparatively high temperature of 180℃ and 210℃ at the surface layer ① of 0-5mm. At the surface layer ② of 5-10mm, the set was hardly formed, as the moisture content did not fall on the fiber saturation point by the hot press treatment. To take more effect of the check prevention, it would be necessary to develop the hot pressing method for drying more inner layer and forming of the set.
