Abstract

The present paper argues that a specialized English course at Kyushu University, entitled “The English and Academic Training Programme at the University of Cambridge,” constitutes CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The course, which the author of the paper has convened over a number of years, is divided into two major subparts: advanced pre-training at Kyushu University and later overseas programme at Cambridge. Both parts of the course embody strong features of CLIL. In the latter programme, participants choose one of three specialized subjects, “Art and Architecture in the 20th Century,” “The Making of Modern Britain,” and “Science at Cambridge,” all of which satisfy ten CLIL principles outlined in Ikeda (2011). In addition, the learning of British history and culture is fostered and the study of science is pursued during both parts of the course, and they also fulfill the ten principles. The author hopes that the paper will go some way towards helping those taking charge of, or planning to establish, a similar English training programme.
