In clinical chemistry, the analysis of biological samples usually involves the quantification of only one target component from multicomponent samples (e.g., human serum and urine) for the purposes of diagnosing diseases, elucidating disease states, and determining therapeutic effects. Therefore, clinical chemistry requires analytical methods with high specificity and sensitivity. Of the various measurement methods devised to date, the ones that use an enzyme reaction (enzymatic analysis) are widely used as part of the many test items necessary for initial medical care. The widespread use of such enzymatic analysis is largely due to the technological innovation and progress made in the related fields. Although the reagent manufacturers have led the development of analytical methods, these can be assembled and further developed as long as there are materials and ingenuity, even in clinical laboratories that conduct daily testing. In this review, we introduce representative development examples and methods done with students for the analysis of biological samples.
