The number of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing globally, and chronic diabetic complications are a serious health concern as well as an economic burden. This epidemic is most likely the result of population growth, ageing and the increasing prevalence of obesity resulting from westernization. However, relatively little is known about the effects of lifestyle factors on glycemic level in patients with T2DM. The Fukuoka Diabetes Registry is a multicenter prospective study designed to investigate the influence of modern treatments on the prognoses of patients with diabetes. A total of 5,131 patients with diabetes were registered between April 2008 and October 2010. We previously reported an inverse association between glycemic control and unhealthy lifestyle factors, including eating quickly, sleep deprivation, smoking and physical inactivity. We hereby introduce a part of new findings of this cohort study and suggest that lifestyle modification may prevent chronic complications of T2DM.
