Abstract
Faculty of arts and sciences (KIKAN Education) offer Japanese language courses for the international students. The classes are offered at eight levels ranging from introductory to advanced and students are required to take the online placement tests (OPT) for qualified to enroll in. In 2020, the reading comprehension test that plays a central role in this OPT was updated. The purpose of this study is to analyze the scores of the old and new tests and confirm the validity of the new test. The results of the regression analysis indicate, based on the test scores of 52 examinees, that there is a significant causation with the scores of grammar tests. However even though the new reading test's scores discriminated levels 5 and 6, it could not discriminate between the levels 3, 4, and 5. Based on this result, it seems to be necessary to increase the difficulty of the middle-levels on the new reading tests.
