Description

This paper considers generic conditionals, which are presented in Dancygier (1998) and Dancygier and Sweetser (2005). This paper, confirming that the protasis of generic conditionals syntactically behaves similarly to that of predictive conditionals, shows that a generic conditional has a cause-effect impact on the relation between p and q. Additionally, the present paper argues that causality in predictive and generic conditionals is related to a semantic feature inherent in these conditional constructions. This feature ensures that predictive and generic conditionals must have causal chain relations between p and q. In Dancygier (1998) and Dancygier and Sweetser (2005), generic conditionals are , by definition, included in non-predictive conditionals. However, the presence or absence of the semantic feature presented in this paper can distinguish between generic and non-predictive conditionals.
