Abstract

This paper investigated about the hawks and hawkiug of Naonori Mathudaira who is the lord of the Murakami Han in Echigo couutry from his diary in the late 17th century. Naonori had about 20 hawks. And most were caught in Murakami Han area. Naonori did hawking many times and leaved his hawks with falconers and had been trained them. The captured prey was instilled in detail. The hawks in the Edo mausion sended to hawking grouuds relatives feudal lords(daimyo) given by the general or general's hawking grouuds entrusted to general's falconers with falconers. And pointed out one end of military family(samurai) interest in animals in the late 17th century through Naonori often gifted or bought horses, dogs and small birds besides hawks. And introduced one end of animal habitat in the late 17th century through Naonori caught diverse animals in Murakami Han area and in the Edo mansion area.
