Description

Ogawa Tamaki 小川環樹 was the professor in the department of Chinese literature at Kyôto University in the postwar period. He was not only a worldwide famous scholar in researching Chinese literature, but also a poet that composed many plain and elegant Chinese poems in the classical style. It is believed that Ogawa's earlier poetical works were composed according to prof. Torao Suzuki's suggestions, but later works, after Suzuki's death, were composed completely on Ogawa's own direction. Main objective of this paper is to introduce his hitherto little known poetry that appeared on the Chinese poetry magazine Gayû 雅友. The remarkable feature of his poetry is that the style he willingly used is almost heptasyllabic quatrain 七言絶句. This choice can be related to his character.
