Description

This paper takes a critical look at the previous researches and focuses on the power process between the husbands and wives. In terms of the division of labor and the marital power, the results of researchers’ measurement are not always in line with the evaluation of husbands or wives. Previous researches have paid attention to the process of power from two dimensions in order to give an explanation of this. One is the process of final decision making which is suggested by the Exchange Theory, and the other one is how power relationships between the husband and wife is shaped. By now, a wide range of factors of the power, such as economics, cultural, emotion and so on have been discussed. Therefore, this paper will include the discussions of conscious or unconscious bargaining between couples, the dependency relations, the manifest power, latent power, and invisible power, etc. However almost all of these researches define power as a certain of ability or potential, and the tendency to objectify power leads to keeping the power process in a subordinate status. Recent studies point out this bias and try to redefine power as a relationship, which is expected to clarify the mechanism of power.
