Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-disclosure as a stress coping strategy in comparison with other stress coping strategies. Two factors were introduced: The first factor was a type of stressful event which had four categories. The second factor had three levels, “possibility of solving the stress event by oneself,” “attribution of responsibility to oneself,” and “seriousness of stress events,” and was hypothesized to affect the selection of stress coping strategies. Following results were obtained. (1) Self-disclosure decreased stress more than the other stress coping strategies regardless of stress event. (2) The effects of the three factors on the selection of stress coping strategies differed one stress event to another.
