Histochemical studies were carried out on the succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and phosphorylase (PhR) activities of the three types of fibers of rat leg muscle (tibialis anterior) denervated 3, 4, 5, days prior to observations respectively. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Three clays after denervation, the SDH activity of red, white and intermediate fibers decreased uniformly, but were still present. On the other hand, the PhR activity of the three types of fibers was completely lost in a certain portion of these fibers. Four and five days after denervation, the decrease of SDH activity proceeded gradually and the number of the fibers which lost PhR activity also increased gradually. 2) Histochemical changes in PhR and SDH activities induced by denervation (after 3 days) were not influenced by the site of nerve section. hrom these results and those in our previous papers, several problems regarding the denervation effect; denervation effects on the SDH and PhR activities and on the red and white fibers, the problem on the relation between the denervation and the dedifferentiation, and the relation of nerve site to the denervation effect were discussed.
