Empathy is an important key concept in social work. In this paper, empathy is examined from a phenomenological point of view to determine its philosophical significance in social welfare theory. Employing theories of inter-subjectivity of Max Sheler, M. E. Merleau-Ponty, etc., it is concluded that empathy is based on interdependent personalism enabled by a departure fron the objectification of human nature. Through these considerations, this study aims at an analysis of empathic interdependence of human existence in relation to welfare.
