抄録

This is a review of research into adolescence, a period of changing from a child to an adult, in Japan, which endeavors to explore subjects which might be important in elucidating the nature of adolescence. In this review, three areas are highlighted: when the concept of adolescence was first recognized in Europe and Japan; features of contemporary Japanese adolescence; and the importance of common sense for today’s Japanese adolescents. It is suggested that cultivating common sense is important for modern Japanese adolescents who are fearful of the difficulty of becoming adults.
