Abstract

In recent years, diversification of career paths of PhD.holders is being promoted politically in Japan. There are few research studies on career decision of doctoral course graduates compared to that of undergraduates and master course graduates. In this research, by conducting interviews after analyzing the preceding researches, I tried to describe how and why do doctoral students choose to work at private companies. Consequently, the thinking process of doctoral students could be classified into three characteristic thought patterns: ‶Comparative model" which sets comparison factors such as salary and compares them among their career candidates, ‶Sympathizing model" which copies the decision of surrounding persons and precedent, and ‶Impression model" which judge based on their values cultivated in the laboratory. These three thought patterns are used properly in dependence on the early and late stages of career decision. The career information is gathered from their teachers and seniors of their laboratories, and online reviews, which cannot be said to be reliable information. Based on the above, Internship and Laboratory rotations in their early stage of the doctoral course are effective for determining satisfactory career decision.
