Situation of traffic safety in Saitama prefecture is very serious because the number of traffic accident fatalities in Saitama prefecture is 4th in Japan (2006). In response, workshop was held to discuss traffic safety measures in collaboration with local government, road users and university students. Target areas were Nobidome crossing, Niiza city (National Route 254) and Sakae town, Hanno city (National Route 299).In the workshop of Sakae town, the road users demanded that road space for bicycle should be separated from cars and pedestrians because there were so many bicycle accidents in this area. Based on this opinion, a bicycle lane was implemented to road shoulders.
