This paper compares the Japanese credit crunch in the 1990’s and the current financial crisis by re-examining and analyzing the roles of the government and the central bank. First, I clarify the problems of the roles of the Japanese government and the central bank during the Japanese credit crunch in the 1990’s and the reform of Japanese financial regulation. Second, I review the current worldwide financial crisis by re-examining the roles of governments and central banks managing the financial crisis in major countries. Third, I attempt to propose what can be done to improve the plans of the government and the central bank in future financial crises.
