The purpose of this study was to clarify the condition of total gastrectomy patients by comparing their physical condition and food intake with those of partial gastrectomy patients. The subjects were 11 gastrectomy patients (5 total gastrectomy; 6 partial gastrectomy). Dietary intake and physical condition were examined 3 times: before gastrectomy, 1 week after gastrectomy, and 2 weeks after gastrectomy. All gastrectomy patients consumed significantly less protein and fatty acids at the second investigation than at the first investigation, going from 69.1 ± 8.8 g to 14.0 ± 5.4 g and from 35.9 ± 11.5 g to 7.4 ± 2.0 g, respectively (p < 0.05). At the third investigation, they reported “burping" and “distention of the lower abdomen." Serum lipid levels were lower than the first investigation, but the dif ference was not significant. Avoiding a decrease in protein and n-3 fatty acid intakes in the early postoperative stages will help total gastrectomy patients recover.
