Abstract

In Classical Yucatec Maya, spoken in Yucatan, Mexico from the16th to the 17th centuries, the focus antipassive voice is used: (1) whenthe agent of a transitive sentence is in focus, (2) when the agent isquestioned, (3) when the agent is negatived, and (4) when the agent isrelativized. It is marked with -ic (incompletive), -0/-i (completive), andbin...-ic (potential), deleting the ergative person marker (Set A) crossreferencedto the agent.
