This is the first part of a series of papers which highlights the crucial importance of long term competition for developing economy and hence promoting employment. Yet the concept of short term competition dominates both contemporary theories and practice, as the common belief in microeconomics that practically concentrates in the short term, but this focus has danger. For promoting an economy, however, a long term perspective is indispensable in order that new technology can be invented and capable human resources developed. To develop a new technology or product, we have to endure long term uncertainty : producing new medicines of higher technology, for example, takes an incredibly long time and carries enormous uncertainty. And, needless to say, to develop human resources capable of carrying out such a task also requires a long term perspective. In practice, however, financial priorities, which aim for short term profits, seem to dominate the business world. How we can regain the long term perspective is the main theme of the series. The first part examines this theme by surveying both contemporary theories and classicalthought. The analysis that follows would examine this issue for various industries both non-manufacturing such as convenience stores, IT, finance, and manufacturing sectors.
