In 1987, a total of 676 serum samples were collected from 328 males and 348 females (age from 12 to 84 years old) in two villages, Bhadrakali and Kotyang, in Nepal. These serum samples were tested for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by reversed passive hemagglutination (RPHA), for antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) by radioimmunoassay (RIA) , and for antibody to hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) by RIA. Overall prevalence of HBsAg was 0.3%, of anti-HBc 7.7%. Overall prevalence of anti-HBc increased with age. Prevalence of anti-HBc was higher in females than in males, and in Kotyang than in Bhadrakali, but was not significant, respectively. Overall prevalence of anti-HAV was 99.1%. Prevalence of anti-HAV was almost 100% in every age group. These data suggest that the areas studied are low endemic for HBV but highly endemic for HAV.
