Cushing's syndrome is the clinical condition resulting from excessive inappropriate exposure to glucocorticoids. It was first fully described clinically by Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) in 1932 before the isolation of either the adrenal steroid hormones or the pituitary peptide hormones. Cushing's syndrome refers to the manifestations of glucocorticoid excess without regard to specific etiology. It can result from the spontaneous causes (pituitary or adrenal adenoma etc) but is more commonly iatrogenic and specially due to glucocorticoid theapy. The clinical manifestations of this syndrome were well described by Cushing himself. Obesity is the most common manifestation, and weight gain is usually the initial symptom. Weight gain is classically central, affecting mainly the face, neck, trunk, and abdomen with relative sparing of the extremities (so-called central or truncal obesity). Although skin changes are less frequent, their presence should arouse the suspicion of cortisol excess. Striae cutis are found commonly abdominal. The facial and body appearances in our experienced cases with Cushing's syndrome (or disease) were presented and briefly discussed the pathophysiology.
