Abstract

One Key factor in bringing an athlete's skill and talents fully into play is mental conditioning starting roughly one month prior to competition. This study focused on developing a method for diagnostically testing the athlete's psychological state prior to competition, which is useful for coaching in mental conditioning. A survey was conducted of 246 athletes belonging to sports clubs in order to develop a diagnostic method. Upon development of this method, we applied it to athletes at several clubs and examined the efficacy. The major procedure and results are as follows: 1. A questionnaire consisting of 20 items was prepared to diagnose the psychological state before competition. A survey was conducted using the questionnaire, and the data obtained was analyzed using a statistical technique. The results proved the validity of the questions and their reliability as a diagnostic test. The questions were categorized into 5 factors and 9 scales. 2. The athletes' psychological states before competition were compared using this questionnaire. The highest scoring group of athletes was the one undergoing special training with a definite goal of participating in the National Athletic Meet. It was also suggested that a continual survey with this questionnaire would facilitate the analysis of changes in the psychological state of the entire team, regular members and individuals, which would be useful for coaching in mental conditioning before competition. 3. Based on these results, and after proper formatting for a diagnostic test form, the Diagnostic Inventory of Psychological State Before Competition (DI PS-B.1) was produced.
