Abstract

Experimental results for natural convection of Freon gas (R114, Pr=0.7) in a fully-partitioned rectangular enclosure in the range 10^5≲Ra_x≲10^<10> are presented and compared with those of air which were obtained from the same apparatus, particularly concerning the vertical temperature distributions of the fluid and partition, the grade of temperature stratification of the fluid, and the vertical distributions of heat flux across the partition and heat transfer coefficient on the partition surface. The relation between local Nusselt number and Rayleigh number is correlated as follows: Forair Nu_x=0.42 Ra_x^<0.3> for 10^5≲Ra_x≲2×10^7 For Freon gas Nu_x=0.068 Ra_x^<0.4> for 2×10^7≲Ra_x≲8×10^9 The local Nusselt numbers are higher than previous results for an isolated vertical plate, and the Rayleigh number at which the transition from laminar to turbulent takes place is much smaller.
