Abstract

Shiny Bare Feet was written in Kenji Miyazawa's early period. Based on an analysis of the implication of "a mountain pass", a key image in the story, this article points out that "a mountain pass" symbolizes not only a place of suffering but also a source of challenge and hope. The paper also maintains that the tendency of returning to reality, which is evident in one of his later works, Night of the Milky Way Railway, has already begun to appear in this early story.
