Description
This paper concerns the so-called ni-causative construction in Japanese, in which the Causee argument is marked by the case particle -ni. I propose that the causative morpheme sase in this construction has the following properties. (i) Sase is an independent lexical item in a Numeration. (I.e., Verb+ sase is not yet a single element at the stage of Numeration.) (ii) Sase cliticizes to the adjacent verbal stem in the PF component. I point out that neither of the Causer and the Causee argument can be included in the conjoined part α in (iii), and show that the observation can be accounted for by assuming (iv) and (v) in addition to (i) and (ii). (iii) ... [α[ ... V], [ ... V]]-sase-Tense. (iv) Sase assigns the case marker -ga to one and only one Causer argument. (v) Sase assigns the case marker -ni to one and only one Causee argument. This paper in effect argues against the analyses in which it is assumed that sase is attached to a verbal stem in the Lexicon, (e.g., Miyagawa 1989), and the analyses in which sase is not considered as an independent element but a reflection of a certain feature (cf. Halle and Marantz 1993).
