抄録

Since 1978 China began to create graduate schools in order to develop its postgraduate education. Now there are in existence 56 graduate schools within the chinese university. A graduate school is an institution that administers postgraduate education and administrative work. Usually a graduate school would be lead by a university president and it retains relatively independent functions. These 56 graduate schools are playing a very important role in the chinese postgraduate education. However, the research conducted on the development of those institutions is still in its infancy. My research is based on a series of surveys conducted by questionnaire and interviewing the deans of those institutions. By analyzing the results it is possible to find out the problems that arise in the management of such graduate schools, for example the ambiguity of the idea of “management” that each of the diean portrays, or the difficulty in constructing academic disciplines, or the problem of internationalizing such institutions. By analyzing the necessity and Probability of carrying out management evaluation in China's graduate schools, it seems that the management evaluation is a good method to solve the current problems in postgraduate schools. There is still lot of research to be done to analyze how to carry out the management evaluation; part of the problem derives from China's supporting policies, the improvement of laws and the lack of a systematic standard method on how to evaluate such management system. This article constitutes the first step in this research field which will open the door to further research.
