This paper argues that cross-regional communications are more difficult to recognize cultural differences than cross-national communications, by discussing how cultural differences are recognize in cross-regional communications. We review the studies which implicate that the cultural differences in interpersonal behavior cause misunderstanding in cross-cultural communications, and the studies which argue that recognition of cultural differences should be required for avoiding such misunderstanding . Previous studies focusing on cross-national communications suggest than, in order to recognize the differences, the person should feel a sense of discomfort for the differences between an expected and actual response of the other, and relate this sense to a national difference. In cross-regional communications, however, because the perceived differences are much less salient then cross-nation, implicit assumption about sharing the same culture are thought to make it difficult to relate the sense of discomfort to a regional difference. Consequently, despite of the discomfort, the person repeatedly misinterprets the other's response based on his or her own culture. Further studies on regional-cultural differences in interpersonal behavior should be called for.
