Abstract

As one of characteristic points of Japanese cities, the boundary lines between urbanized and rural area have formed the dynamic complex figures caused by sprawl. This study aims to clarify the complexity of boundary lines through the case study on the rapid growth in Itoshima Region. Based on chronological analysis, it clarifies the transforming process of the lines and the differences between the edges of actual urbanized areas and the land use control lines regulated by the city planning system. It shows that the boundary line complexity in the case has patterns classified into four types by the fractal dimension and 200-meter mesh analysis, and Consequently proposes that the patterns of urban sprawl can be classified by the quantitative analysis elaborated through the case study.
