Abstract

The experimental and analytical investigations were made to obtain a better approach to modeling of the base-flow phenomena, using a sand-model and two kinds of mathematical model. The mathematical m odels described herein are as follows: (1) two-dimensional model with unsaturated-saturated transient seepage flow; (2) two-dimensional model with the combined flow of unsaturated v e rtical flow and saturated horizontal flow. As a result, the authors ob t ained the following conclusions. (1) In the analysis of the experimental results b y using the former mathematical model, it is very important to adopt the correct functional relationships between hydraulic conductivity and pressure head, and soil moisture content and pressure head. (2) In the analysis of the experimental results by using the latter mathematical model, it is very important to model the unsaturated vertical flow, namely the re-charge process from the unsaturated zone to the saturated zone, correctly. (3) The former mathematical model is more troublesome than the latter one in the application. In addition, it is very difficult to obtain the correct relationships between hydraulic conductivity and pressure head, and between soil moisture content and pressure head in a complex and large basin. These facts suggest that the latter mathematical model will offer a better way to modeling the base-flow phenomena.
