Description

When examining Nagauta play texts published during the Edo period, many kinds of neumatic symbols are found on the right sides of proses. The Nagauta play texts that include these symbols are limited to those of Nagauta pieces that were first performed in public during the period from Kyoho era (1716-1735) to An-ei era (1772-1780). Since these neumatic symbols are similar with those seen in Utai libretto or Heike notation, they may have had notational information including pitch, duration, kind of voice, etc. However, meanings of these symbols have not been known until today. In this study the typical neumatic symbols appeared in 102 Nagauta play texts are examined. First, 172 kinds of neumatic symbols are extracted from these texts. They are roughly classified into three groups: single neume, compound neume, and deformed neume. Second, they are handwritten as bit-map representation. And lastly, they are classified and named based on form in full detail, respectively. In this paper, classification of 97 kinds of single neumes is discussed.
