Abstract

The objective of this research is to obtain how to affectively apply the concept of "walkability" and "walkable neighborhood", which is enthusiastically researched in the U.S. and Europe, to Japanese cities. This research has been conducted on all districts in Fukuoka City, Japan, and they have been categorized into two different types based on their regional characteristics. Then, the questionnaire survey of citizens' consciousness about walking and the walking environment has been carried out to refine the required quality of "walkable neighborhood". As the result, it is clarified that there is difference of the attitude toward walking between those who like walking and those who don't. Moreover, it is identified that residents' attachment to the region affects the reason of walking. Consequently, how to encourage more people to walk is suggested.
