Description

The Nostalgic Experiences Inventory for measuring the strength of emotion and physical feelings related to nostalgic experiences was developed and the influence of different styles of expression on nostalgic experiences was investigated. Participants were college students (n = 200). Of these, 187 participants wrote about their nostalgic experience and 13 participants verbally described their nostalgic experience. After expressing their nostalgic experience verbally or by writing, all participants completed a questionnaire inquiring emotion and physical feelings that were related to the nostalgic experience. The results suggested that nostalgic experiences included the emotion of "affinity" and "sweet sorrow," as well as the the physical feelings of "relaxation" and "being uplifted." The method of expressing feelings had no effect on the experience of affinity, whereas it had an effect on feelings of sweet sorrow, relaxation, and being uplifted. These results indicate the need to consider the effect of differences in expression style during memory recollection and also highlight the need to consider the influence of personal experiences during recollection.
