Although some researchers treat Japanese-Korean (JK) code-switching (CS) merely as a mistake, there are also examples of CS being applied in Korean language education in the classroom. This study attempts to understand how the concept of CS in Korean language education can be utilized. To this end, examples where bilingual CS has been applied in English education have been analyzed and the linguistic, as well as sociological characteristics of JKCS considered. Furthermore, some problematic issues related to JKCS and their underlying causes have been investigated. Due to limited time and number of participants (three teachers), it proved difficult to formulate a comprehensive description of the various functions of JKCS. Nonetheless, the following can be concluded from the results: 1) the three participants’ preferred function of JKCS was “translation,” 2) unlike in English language education CS, the direction of code-switching( from native language to target language, or vice versa) varied, 3) a wide array of usage patterns existed, 4) there were some differences concerning the social function of switching, such as “praise” or “encouragement.” Possible causes of the current situation include a lack of understanding about JKCS and insufficient development of a systematized form of JKCS to a level that would enable the application of the concept in education.
