Description
The critical focus of this article is the Sanno festival of the Hiyoshi taisha in Shiga prefecture, It is an academic exploration of the festival's historical origins, It takes issue with the established view that the festival, as it is performed today, is an archetype and that it exhibits pre-historical origins, The research that has delivered this verdict is methodically flawed, and needs to be critically re-examined. This article begins from the position that all festivals reproduce themselves and reinvent themselves, even as they seek to locate their origins in the most distant past. The research on which this article is based is a combination of fieldwork and analysis of historical resources.
