Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the characteristics of character education in South Korea, including its position in the moral education curriculum and its promotion in current school educational conditions, from the perspective of character education in the United States. First, through surveying the U.S. case, which brings the original idea of the activity in South Korea, the point of view for analyzing the case in South Korea was set. Second, observing its position in the moral education curriculum and its adoption and application process, the character education in South Korea was overviewed. Third, by comparing the case of South Korea with the U.S., the Korean South Korea was overviewed. Third, by comparing the case of South Korea with the U.S., the Korean character education, which has been trying to enhance the character education in the subject of moral education, was examined. The results indicated that (1) it had been promoted actively as part of the nationally driven movement of educational reform; (2) the concept of "character" presented the quality that can be performed both at an individual and a member-of-society level; (3) character education adopted as a tool for reconsidering the role and the function of school education; and (4) moral education has come to be regarded as character education.
