Kokudenzan Jizoji Temple in Komatsushima City, Tokushima was a large head temple during the Edo period with six sub temples and nine branch temples. Jizoji Temple performed usual Buddhist services such as funerals, death anniversary memorial services for the families supporting the temple, and annual religious functions. Besides, Jizoji Temple carried out its duties as a head temple under temple control system established by Edo Shogunate. They include receiving and disseminating various notifications from a magistrate of temples and shrines (寺社奉行) and county representative (郡代) to its sub temples and branch temples, and collecting and submitting petitions from those sub− and branch−temples. "Ofure Okubarigaki Sho−negai hikae" is a document compiling copies of the notifications and petitions from the 12th year of Bunsei Period (1829) to the 4th year of Koka period (1847) when Yugi Grand Priest (宥義大和尚) served as Chief Priest of Jizoji Temple. In this article, the author argued that this document is an important text providing rich information about changing chief priests of branch temples, age limit of chief priests and detailed report of incidents occurred near Jizoji Temple. The author reprinted the entire text in order to provide basic resources to study local history.
