Abstract

The reorganization of the local administration was a basis of the despotic monarchy of the early Ri dynasty. On the other hand it was a reflection of the rural community controlled by doseishizoku 土姓士族, native aristocracy. I think it is worthy of notice that the centralized local administration depended upon such a rural community. In this article, therefore, I would like to investigate into the relation between the centralized local administration and the rural community. Investigating into the relation I will pay attention to these points; the forming process of doseishizoku and its character; the development of the autonomy of doseishizoku from ryūkyōsho 留郷所 establishing movement to the establishment of kyōyaku 郷約 and shoin 書院; dominion of doseishizoku over the other members of the rural community; finally the continuous intention of doseishizoku to hold a central government post.
