Description
Until now, it has been generally assumed that in the aftermath of the Li Tan rebellion, the Yuan dynasty abandoned its policy of indirectly governing China through Han Chinese warlords in favor of centraized rule. This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between the Zhang, a Han Chinese warlord family and. the royal Qaci'un family which ruled Jinan. Its conclusions, in brief, are as follows. (1) Zhang Rong (張栄) surrendered to Alcidai, of the Qaci'un family, and lord of Jinan in Shandong (山東) late in the reign of Cinggis Qan. After Zhang Rong's surrender, the Zhang governed Jinan. (2) After the Li Tan rebellion, Qubilai Qa'an relieved the Zhang of their post as governer of Jinan, and instead dispatched central officials. The Zhang continued to reside in Jinan, and intermarry with the Qaci'un. (3) After the Nayan rebellion (1287-1291), the Qaci'un continued to rule the province of Jinan, and Jianchang (建昌) in Jiangxi (江西). The relationship between the Zhang and Qaci'un families continued, as they were appointed daruɣaci of Jianchang by the Qaci'un. (4) Although Qubilai Qa'an has been thought to have expanded the powers of the centralized imperial state in the aftermath of the Li Tan rebellion, it should instead be clear that even after Qubilai Qa'an's reign, the land holdings of royal families and noted retainers from the time of Cinggis Qan were maintained. Indeed, after Qubilai's conquest of southern China (the southern Song), some of the newly occupied areas were granted to these families. Yuan rule is best characterized by two systems : one of centralized Chinese bureaucratic rule, and one of a post-Cinggis Qan type of Mongolian feudalism. Not only did the Yuan dynasty possess Chinese characteristics, but Mongol ones as well.
