抄録

The word “Living National Treasure” is a coined word that is used to refer to a Holder of Intangible Cultural Property. When speaking of the contemporary period in the history of Japanese ceramics, the role played by the people who have been designated Living National Treasures cannot be ignored. In this paper, the author studies information concerning exhibitions held in Japan in order to examine how the public was notified of the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties (1950) and the system of designating Holders/Holding Groups of Important Intangible Cultural Properties that was introduced in 1954 at the time of the revision to the Law and how the public accepted them. In this process, the author attempts to analyze exhibitions using the database on exhibitions of modern and contemporary art (in Japanese only, http://archives.tobunken.go.jp/ index 6.html) compiled by the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo. The traditional methods for making ceramics that are designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties differ depending on the period and place in Japan where they were started, accepted and developed as well as on the raw materials, the manufacturing processes or the existence of highly skilled successors today, and there does not seem to be a well-ordered system of categorization. Thus, as a future project, the author hopes to send out comprehensive information concerning the methods of manufacture and Holders/Holding Groups of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, particularly in the field of ceramics.
