Abstract

No relics of the flags in the Pre-Ch'in 先秦 period have been found yet; the arranged description about their kinds and uses is found in the chapter Szû-ch'ang 司常 about the flag-managing office of Chou-li 周礼, in which flags with various names were distinguished not by their forms but by their painted design; but the flags in pictorial signs or characters in the Yin 殷 and the western Chou 西周 period and those in the pictures from the Warring-states period to Han 漢 dynasty had various styles. This article proves that various kinds of flags in the chapter of Chou-li were naturally the following styles, using the sources of the comments in classics and the above pictorial expressions : [Table omitted] In addition, we explain the ensigns in the classics and the real styles of the flags and the like used in funeral, and also make reference to the religious origin flags in China----to invite God from Heaven.
