Abstract

In ancient Japan, Kokufu 国府, capital of local administration, occupted a square area with an average of 8 to 6 square-chō 町 and in its interior had a chessboard pattern of one chō square. On the other hand, Jōri 条里 system, also executed as rural planning at that period, showed a similar chessboard pattern. Prof. Yonekura, Jiro 米倉二郎 published the assumption that Kokufu might be established on the intersecting points of borderlines in every 6 chō. This article is to restore the ancient plans of Kokufu in Awa-Shikoku 阿波, Awa-Kanto 安房, Buzen 豊前, Harima 播磨, and Bizen 備前, according to the remains and other various sources except for those of Jōri, and then to examine their relations with Jōri and with the outline of other remains of Kokufu using some achievements of other students. The result is as follows : (1) On the direction of the partition lines of the land both in Kokufu and in Jōri; a) When the lines of Jōri do not run from north to south, those of Kokufu often do. b) When the lines of Jōri run from north to south, those of Kokufu often do, too; but they run to the different direction according to the purpose. This is due to the fact that Kokufu should be constructed, as a rule, facing to the south like the Capital's castle, while Jōri does not always run precisely from north to south as it follows the inclination of the land surface for irrigation; upon these facts, in the Jōriregion, we can sometimes find the site of Kokufu discerning particular section of the land where parcels show different direction from Jōrisystem around it. (2) On the relation of the situation of Kokufu to the border line of Jōri, no relation can be found. According to the Harima case, Jōri seems to be numbered on the basis of the situation of Kokufu, but in this case the partition of land in Jōri was held at first, while Kokufu was indifferently established, and then Jōri seeme to be numbered on the basis of the situation of Kokufu.
