The Bohaiguozhichangbian, which is famous as the first monograph on Bohai history in China, was written, edited and published by Jin Yufu in Manzhouguo 滿洲國. He started the writing and editing of the Bohaiguozhichangbian while he was confined due to the Manchurian Incident. After his release, he assumed the post of vice-director of the national Fengtian library of Manzhouguo, but exiled himself in Shanghai in 1936. In China, researchers of Bohai history recently highly appreciate the Bohaiguozhichangbian as a monograph in which Jin Yufu argued that Bohai was a local government of an ethnic group in China and in which he sought to prove that the northeast was historically a territory of China that resisted invasion by Japan. However, I am skeptical of this view. In this paper I examine the editorial process of the Bohaiguozhichangbian in order to investigate the credibility of this claim. The results of my examination are as follows. 1. The precise details of the editorial process of the Bohaiguozhichangbian are as follows ; Jin Yufu began writing and editing in November 1931 during his confinement, a complete outline was finished in December 1931 when he was released. The first draft was completed in January 1932, the second draft in April 1932, and the third draft in December 1932. Publication work was begun in August 1933, and the book was published in May 1934. 2. As the Bohaiguozhichangbian was completed with the cooperation of Japanese researchers, Jin Yufu evaluated their research highly and had respect and a feeling of gratitude toward them. 3. Jin Yufu strove to make the Bohaiguozhichangbian fit the form of traditional Chinese histories because he sought to place Bohai into the stream of northeastern Chinese history, as the Jin 金 and Qing 淸 had previously been. 4. It is clear that Jin Yufu was intent on denying Manzhouguo in the Bohaiguozhichangbian because the name of current places on the map of Bohai in this monograph used the place name that had been used prior to the establishment of Manzhouguo. But, to conceal his intent from general readers, Jin changed the date of the preface and introductory note to December 1931 so that it appeared as if the map had been made before the establishment of Manzhouguo. The reason he wished to have people think the map was created in December 1931 was because he hoped that only those who knew the true circumstances would realize the creation of the Bohaiguozhichangbian was the result of his being aroused by his confinement due to the Manchurian Incident. 5. Jin Yufu did not understand that Bohai was a local government of an ethnic group within Tang China, and there was a strong local "regionalism" rather than a national "patriotism" behind his refusal to accept Manzhouguo.
